Whatever your addiction might be - alcohol, drugs, food, anger, gambling, etc. - everyone is recovering from something. We use the Life Recovery Bible as our text book which uses a 12 step model as we navigate our way to recovery.

This group is led by John and Joan Murphy. Joan was born in Boston and had a long career as a Marine. The mother of four (4), she has a BA in Religious Studies and is certified in drug and alcohol addiction. John was born in Maryland and was previously a surveyor and corrections officer. They met and married in Virginia Beach, VA, retired in 2015, and have been proud Valorous members for six (6) years.

Bereaved Parents Support Group

Our goal at these meetings is to point grieving parents to our only true source of comfort, Jesus Christ. Although our topics of discussion may be painful, and tears will be inevitable, our desire will be to honor God by seeking how we can live well while we’re waiting to be reunited with our children someday. Our group will be a safe and confidential place to support one another. Come to share or just to listen, but please come regardless. You are not alone.

About the Leader
Don and Lisa Faris moved to the NC Coast in May of 2022. They both serve on the staff of SIM International and work remotely. They are parents to Bobby and Emily. Bobby, his wife, and their four-month-old daughter live in Clayton, NC. Emily ran ahead to Heaven on Feb 10, 2016, at the age of eighteen from an undiagnosed heart condition. Don and Lisa have felt a clear call to minister to fellow bereaved parents. Valorous Church has provided them with this opportunity. Their prayer is that this specific support group will bring hope, provide compassion and a measure of healing to those who have lost children.

The Walkers hail from the south-central part of Illinois and St. Louis, MO. They served in their home church for nearly 30 years in many capacities from youth leaders, small group leaders, missions, and marriage ministry. As Christians, we want to honor God in our everyday lives. As singles, we may not always have someone to walk that out with. So, we seek to create a supportive community where we can aid and encourage one another in deepening our spiritual lives; to live a life pleasing to God and worthy of His calling.

We will be focusing on a book of the Bible, reading scripture and discussing how it applies to our lives and specifically to our identity in Christ as a single person. Open discussion with biblical background, history and insight. Co-ed, 40+.

Jill hails from the North, specifically New York State and Massachusetts, and moved to South Carolina 3 years ago to be near family. She has been a born-again believer in Christ since 2006 and enjoys sharing the Word of God with others. She loves how God’s Word can totally transform lives! Jackie has been leading women's Bible studies for close to 30 years and is the leader of Fearless and Cheerful Ministries. With a contagious love for Jesus and a story for almost everything, Jackie helps her ladies dig deeper in their faith, understand who God says we are in Christ, and trust Jesus so much more! We will be doing an in-depth study of Patrick Morley's book, "The Man in the Mirror", solving the 24 problems men face today. Books will be provided as needed. This group is facilitated by Steve Brewer but is open to share this role with any one of interest. We meet at the church the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays of the month at 6:30pm.

Steve and his wife Merlyn moved to the area in late 2021 and heard positive things about Valorous Church, Barefoot Church at the time. Started attending and soon got involved in life groups and the Connect and Parking ministries on Sundays. Both Steve and his wife have served as outside volunteers in the JUMPSTART prison ministry.

About the Group

Starting November 19th, we will begin a 13-week Bible Study series in the Book of Galatians entitled “Journey Into Liberated Living.” We will learn how Paul and the gospel of Christ were both under attack, and how Paul defended his authority. We will see how we are justified by faith alone, and not by our works. As we conduct this study, we want to understand the conflict between grace and law, or faith and deeds, in the first century churches in Galatia; but also, be aware of modern parallels in churches today.

A workbook will be available and helpful. In-depth Bible Study pass-outs, sent via email every Wednesday prior to the upcoming teleconference, will be provided to help prepare for each lesson discussion, in conjunction with each workbook lesson.

About the Leader
George is a “student of the Bible,” and never tires of learning more of what is available to him through the Holy Word of God. He has been teaching Bible Study for over 30 years. George and Claudia retired from International Paper Company in Memphis in 2006 and relocated to Little River in 2007. After retiring from International Paper he continued his thirst for deeper insight into the Word of God. He graduated from Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbia, SC in 2011 and went on to receive the Doctorate of Ministry degree from North Greenville University in Greenville, SC in 2015. George retired from full time pastoring in October, 2023, but is still actively teaching Bible Study every week.

Grief Share

The journey of grief can be easier to face with the support of others who understand the deep pain felt with the loss of a loved one. We have been called to share each others trials and sorrow and to rejoice with one another in our joy in the midst of pain. “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” (Roman 12:15). Come let us walk this road together, encouraging one another, and discovering how God will bring beauty from our ashes. We Meet every week for 14th sessions at the Little River Library which is on Hwy 57 near the Hwy 9 & 57 intersection, each Monday at 2 to 4 PM for the 14th weeks. We then take a break and then start over again. 1ST Sessions starts Monday January 13th. See you then.

About the Leader
Karen was 27 years old and mother of 2 young kids when her husband was killed in an auto accident. She was a grieving mom blaming God for what had happened to them. As time passed she meet and remarried a widower with 2 young girls. Over the last 50 years they have had Grandchildren and great Grandchildren. But in 2016 their son passed away bringing Grief back into both their lives. Her experiences of loss have provided her with a deep compassion for others in their own loss. Karen too desires to support others on their own journey through grief, sharing hope in the midst of darkness. Karen is excited to provide a safe space for those experiencing loss. A place to talk, share, cry, and heal. With God leading the way, they desire to build a community of believers helping each other on their journey of loss to find the “peace of God, which transcends all understanding” (Philippians 4:7).

Hi, my name is Trudy Vereen, and I am a mother of two wonderful adult children and GiGi of two grandchildren. I am a thriving survivor from a divorce and because of my experience during this trying and difficult time in my life I discovered DivorceCare. It’s my passion and calling now to help coach others through what they are going through. I have been a partner and volunteer with Valorous Church for 16 years on the Valorous Kids, Care, and Prayer Teams and am presently serving on the Greeting Committee. My greatest joy is meeting people where they are and helping them while doing so introducing them to God whom I know to be a delivery and Savior to all. Favorite Scripture Proverbs 3:5-6 - In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He will direct thy path. I enjoy playing with my 4-legged Yorkie named Queen Suga, listening to music, and reading while relaxing at the beach. And, of course, enjoying family time and spending time with my grandchildren.

Bill and Jill Pappas moved to Little River, full time 2 and a half years ago, after retiring from South Jersey. They have five adult children, ranging in ages from 38-24. All five adult children moved out of New Jersey, on their own and life was really peaceful in retirement. That was short lived when the youngest adult child decided to relocate and moved back in temporarily. We are looking forward to getting back to teaching/hosting life groups and sharing our adult children experiences with other parents.
