Notes
And when we came into Rome, Paul was allowed to stay by himself, with the soldier who guarded him… And some were convinced by what he said, but others disbelieved. And disagreeing among themselves, they departed after Paul had made one statement: “The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet: “‘Go to this people, and say, “You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive.” For this people's heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed; lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.’
Acts 28:16, 24-27 (ESV)
Paul wrote and ministered during this time while under house arrest in Rome, chained to a Roman guard. Even in confinement, he continued to preach, teach, and welcome those who came to hear the message of Christ.
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
1 Peter 2:21 (ESV)
What does it look like to live a life on mission? Many believers assume that living for God should be comfortable. But Scripture consistently shows the opposite. Faithfulness often involves hardship, sacrifice, and perseverance. God comforts His people–the Holy Spirit is called our Comforter–but the Christian life is not built around pursuing comfort. We were created to push back against darkness, and that does not lead to an easy life. To follow Christ means we follow His example, including perseverance through difficulty.
We are called not only to receive blessings from God, but to be a blessing to others. Anything God gives us - resources, encouragement, opportunities, gifts - is meant to flow through us, not just pile up to get dusty.
But often we fall into a cycle of seeking greater comfort, and so over time, our treasure can quietly shift away from God’s mission and toward our own comfort. Meanwhile, many believers around the world risk persecution simply to gather together in worship.
We are not called to be consumers of the light. We are called to carry it. Many churches function because a small percentage of people serve faithfully behind the scenes. Ministry does not simply happen on Sunday - it requires dedication, sacrifice, and obedience throughout the week.
In the early church, the gospel spread not just through gatherings, but through believers whose lives reflected Christ so clearly that others were drawn to the message. A church community should be a source of light in its surrounding community.
A life on mission is not easy. When believers begin to take their calling seriously, opposition will come. Scripture reminds us that the enemy rarely appears obviously evil. Instead, he often disguises himself as something attractive - sometimes even as comfort, distraction, or convenience. That is why Scripture calls us to test everything against God’s Word.
He lived there two whole years at his own expense, and welcomed all who came to him…
Acts 28:30 (ESV)
Paul served faithfully even whether he was free, imprisoned, or on house arrest. His circumstances did not limit his mission. In fact, many of Paul’s letters were written while he was confined. What looked like chains actually became opportunities for God to work. Our struggles do not disqualify us from God’s mission. Often, they become the very place where God works most powerfully.
Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”
Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Hebrews 13:1-8 (ESV)
The enemy is not concerned if we just read our Bibles, attend church, or participate in Bible studies. What concerns him is when believers actually begin to live out the Word of God - when we start speaking the name of Jesus, obeying Scripture, loving others boldly, and living by faith. Jesus called His followers the salt of the earth. Salt changes the flavor of whatever it touches. The enemy will try to keep us too ashamed to speak, too busy to serve, too discouraged to hope, too anxious to act. But imagine a church fully awake, full of people who pray, serve, love, and faithfully point others to Christ.
